Critter Tips
To help prevent an infestation of rodents, only feed your pets enough food that they will eat at one time. Leaving pets food sit out, only encourges rodentsto feed and establish nestings sites close to your pets food bowls. It is also a good idea to have a proffesional check your home once a year for new openings that would allow rodents to enter your homes attic and crawl space. Keep in mind that a 1/2" space is all that they need to enter.
With the cold approching us, lady bugs will start to enter homes for the winter. It is a good idea to check the caulking around doors and windows. Use a quality silicone caulk to seal these areas. Also, remember to scrape out old dry caulk before applying new sealant.
If you travel, it is a good idea to check your hotels beds for bed bugs. Lift the bedding and check the seams for dark spots and also check the mattress for spots as well. This will give you an indication if bed bugs have been present in the room or not, as this is could be the expelled blood from them feeding. While this is not the only way to see if bed bugs have been present, its one of the first things you can do as an amateur. If you think you may have been around bed bugs, all clothing should be placed in your dryer right away upon returning from a trip, on high heat for 30 min. This will kill any eggs that you may have brought home with you. Don’t forget your Luggage, either leave it outside in the cold (under 32), or place it in the freezer as this will also kill the bed bugs. A professional should be called in right away.
As spring is just around the corner, now is the time to start getting ready for all those problem animals and reptiles.
Make sure your foundation is secure from snakes, skunks, rats and opossums. It is very common for these animals to use the basement and crawl spaces for shelter and a place to rear young protected. They can often find their way into your home and attic from under your house. Our wildlife specialist can do an inspection and repairs to keep these animals out. It is also a good time to start thinking about snake repellant to help keep snakes away from your home.
Another area to check is the roof and gutter line as well as gable and roof vents. Squirrels and raccoons are getting ready to have spring litters and the attic is a favorite place of theirs. They only need a very small gap to enter and then once in, can damage wires, cause fires, use your attic as a toilet, and create an insect infestation of fleas, ticks and lice.
